2. **Trademark / brand layer**: The four-letter MAIK string is heavily occupied globally (153 hits in USPTO; 22 in lighting-adjacent classes; multiple Chinese MAIK*-style filings in lighting). The UK incumbent **MAiK Lifestyle** (Edinburgh, since 2016) is a live design-led homewares brand currently selling premium socks via maiklifestyle.com — clearly differentiated from sculptural lighting but operates in the same retail aesthetic lane.
3. **Social layer**: `@maik` is squatted on Instagram (2,021 followers, 0 posts) and registered on Substack, Pinterest, Threads, YouTube. `@maikstudio`, `@maik.studio`, `@maikdesign` all return real content-bearing accounts. Cannot launch coherent omni-channel brand from suffixed handles when every parent is taken.

The single strongest defensive option for sticking with Maik: trade as **Maik Studio (AU)** or **Maik Lighting**, file in Class 11, accept that you cannot acquire maik.com / @maik / maikstudio.com, and live on `maik.au` (available) + a long-form social handle. Viable last-resort but not launchable as a premium 2026 Q3 AU drop.

**Recommended consumer brand: NOCTUA** (backups: VOLTA, ORVA, LITRA, VESTA).

## 2. Recommendation

### Primary: pivot to NOCTUA
- **Etymology / fit**: Latin for "owl" / creature of the night. Evokes light-after-dark, watchful presence. Three syllables, premium European-coded.
- **AU consonance**: Latin/Italianate naming reads as premium homewares (cf. Tom Dixon, Flos, Foscarini).
- **Risk**: `noctua.com` is taken (Austrian PC cooling-fan maker) — collision but zero category overlap. Take `noctua.com.au` and accept .com remains in PC-cooling hands.
